About Me Through Music

I’m a singer-songwriter, a songwriting coach
and the founder of Songwriting School.

Charlotte Yates

Director

I’ve released seven solo albums, including 1991’s Queen Charlotte Sounds, which features the APRA Silver Scroll finalist single, Red Letter. I’ve contributed to a growing catalogue of 15 compilations including several successful album-concert series of poetry set to music for noted NZ writers James K Baxter, Hone Tuwhare, Witi Ihimaera and Katherine Mansfield.

These have given me the privilege of working alongside many wonderful NZ recording artists and songwriters from Dave Dobbyn to Emma Paki, Julia Deans to Lawrence Arabia, strawpeople to Goldenhorse, Mahinaarangi Tocker to King Kapisi.

I’m also a member of the Screen Composers Guild and write music for web/AV projects and short film. Several of my songs have been sync’ed in television & film, including Shortland Street, The Burbs and The Strip.

I’ve studied Contemporary Music Technology and Composition at La Trobe University in Melbourne, and Commercial Songwriting through Berklee College of Music, USA.

Songwriting School was set up in 2021 in response to demand for a programme of ongoing tutorials rather than one-off events.

Whether you’re starting from scratch or a bit stuck, in full flight or in a rut with your songwriting,
I look forward to hearing from you.
